Automotive designer is very prospective career in the future because there will be more demand in transportation. If you have kids and they like drawing car, perhaps they tell you that they want to make their own car in the future. Do not laugh and underestimate on their ambition since automotive designer is the real career.
Basically, vehicle designer's duty is creating the exterior and interior appearance of vehicles. They are responsible in designing many vehicles, such as car, trucks, vans, buses, and motorcycles. There is specific team which consists of several person and they have their own job description like creating the, interior, colors, materials and trim. This is a very challenging with almost no risk. The designing process is started with setting the digital or manual sketches. If they are approved by management or supervisor, the next jobs are drawing the detail and developing the clay or digital models. These procedures are applied in all aspects like exterior, interior, and color and trim design.
If you are interested in this career, you should begin from high school. Since this is considered as competitive careers in the design industry, the competition to gain admission in university is higher and not all college offer transportation design classes. In high school, you should get good credit in all the two-dimensional drawing classes. However, this is far from enough to just be able to draw a car. You need to know more about aerodynamics, engineering concepts and ergonomics. If you have lower understanding in math and physics, it will be very hard to design a car although you can draw very well.
Moreover, all colleges need portfolio. If you achieve better portfolio, you have better chance to be accepted in a prestigious institution. Then, you can do small research to know the credibility of the faculty and the reputation of the courses. Moreover, you may ask whether the college has collaborated with auto industries. Normally, you need to complete a four-year design major but some schools provide an internship in a design studio during the third or fourth year. These are valuable since internships are often a direct path to an entry-level job upon graduation.
